Sony has acquired Bluepoint Games, the studio behind some of the best remasters and remakes in the industry
Some of the best games on PlayStation 5 so far have been remasters of older titles, so it is only fitting that Sony has officially acquired Bluepoint Games, the acclaimed remastering studio. It is the same team behind the remakes of Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, as well as fantastic remasters of the first three Uncharted games, the cult classic Gravity Rush, and the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection and Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection for previous-gen consoles. Bluepoint was also responsible for the excellent Flower PS4 port from 2013.
However, that is not the only reason Sony's Bluepoint acquisition is not surprising. When the company bought Returnal developer Housemarque in June, it accidentally uploaded an image that showed a Bluepoint acquisition instead:
With Sony's additional resources, we may see more remasters and remakes, but the studio will also create its own games, according to a statement provided to IGN. “For our next project, we are currently developing original content. We can not say exactly what it is, but it is the next step in our evolution.”
Sony is under pressure right now to show that it has killer content for the PS5, as every first-party game it promised for 2021 has been delayed. God of War: Ragnarok, Gran Turismo 7, and Horizon Forbidden West were all scheduled for release in 2021, but Horizon was recently pushed back to February. Third-party games have also experienced delays.
To that end, the company has been beefing up its studios, purchasing Firesprite, the creators of The Playroom, in addition to Housemarque and Bluepoint.
Another acclaimed remastering and porting studio, Aspyr, is working on a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Aspyr is best known for porting countless titles to Mac, but it has also recently been active in bringing older games to the Nintendo Switch. PS5 will be the only console with it. Uncharted games are coming to PC... and PS5, too, with the new Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, which includes both Uncharted 4 and a fantastic spinoff in The Lost Legacy, as we reported in May.
It is a great time to love old games, with these and the return of N64 and Sega Genesis titles — they are coming to Nintendo Switch Online.
