Valve refunds Dota 2 International tickets just days before the event

The Dota 2 world championships, The International 2021, will be held without an audience this year. Valve, the creator of Dota 2, has refunded all tickets to the October 7th event as of yesterday, October 2nd. Bucharest, Romania, was supposed to host the event.

"We have been carefully evaluating the continued rise of Covid rates in Romania, as well as the resulting introduction of new local restrictions in Bucharest," Valve says in a statement.

"We wanted nothing more than to welcome fans to the event live, but we can no longer do so in a way that allows us to prioritize the health and well-being of both audience members and participants," the statement continues. "Those who purchased tickets will be issued a full refund automatically."

The news came just days after multiple members of Team Aster, one of the tournament's participants, tested positive for Covid-19. On social media, fans are torn between being angry about the event's cancellation and being relieved that their favorite esports athletes are no longer in danger.
