Microsoft has begun rolling out new updates for Paint and Notepad to users enrolled in the Windows Insider programme. The updates introduce several AI-powered features, including an AI colouring book tool in Paint and improved Markdown support in Notepad. These features are currently available in the Canary and Dev Channels on Windows 11 and are expected to reach more users in the coming months.
According to Microsoft’s Windows blog, the new AI colouring book feature in Paint allows users to create custom colouring pages using text prompts. By entering a description, the app generates simplified line art that can be coloured digitally or printed. This feature is limited to Copilot+ PCs and requires users to sign in with a Microsoft account.
Paint has also received a new fill tolerance slider. This option gives users more control over how the Fill tool applies colour, making it easier to handle detailed areas and prevent colour overflow when working on more precise designs.
Notepad is also getting several improvements. Microsoft has expanded Markdown support to include strikethrough text and nested lists. These formatting options can be accessed through keyboard shortcuts, a formatting toolbar, or by manually typing Markdown syntax. In addition, Notepad now includes a refreshed welcome screen that highlights recently added features.
The update also improves Notepad’s AI text tools, including Write, Rewrite, and Summarise. These tools now use streaming previews, allowing users to see results as they are generated instead of waiting for the full output. The AI features can run locally or in the cloud, but users must be signed in with a Microsoft account to access them.
