OpenAI has officially announced plans to introduce advertisements to ChatGPT. The company revealed that ad testing will begin soon, starting with users in the United States. After the testing phase, OpenAI is expected to roll out ads to more regions worldwide.

In a post shared on X, OpenAI said that ads will initially appear in the ChatGPT Free and Go tiers. The company also published a blog post outlining how advertising will be handled on the platform and what safeguards will be in place for users.

According to OpenAI, ads will not influence ChatGPT’s responses and will always be clearly separated from AI-generated content. The company also stated that conversations with ChatGPT will not be shared with advertisers. Ads will not appear for users subscribed to Plus, Pro, Enterprise, or Business plans.

OpenAI added that users will have control over how their data is used for advertising purposes. While limited non-conversational data may be used to personalize ads, users will be able to disable this option and delete ad-related data at any time. The company also said it does not plan to adjust ChatGPT to boost engagement solely for ad visibility.

Additionally, OpenAI noted that ads on ChatGPT will aim to be informative and conversational. Small businesses may also be able to create interactive AI-based experiences after users click on an ad. As testing continues, details such as ad formats, availability, and supported tiers may still change before a full public rollout.
