WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature to beta testers, designed to safeguard users from unwanted messages sent by unknown accounts. The feature, discovered by a tracker, automatically filters out messages from unidentified senders under specific conditions. Available to select testers, it must be manually enabled but will eventually be part of two other advanced privacy features aimed at enhancing user safety.
After updating to WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.20.16, users can access the new setting that blocks messages from unknown accounts (via WABetaInfo). To activate the feature, beta testers with the latest version can navigate to the three-dot menu > Settings > Privacy > Advanced > Block unknown account messages.
WhatsApp describes the feature as a way to protect users' accounts and improve device performance. Once activated, the platform blocks messages from unknown accounts that exceed a certain volume, which helps prevent device slowdown due to spam. This feature seems targeted at blocking automated spam messages that could impact device performance.
Currently, this feature is limited to beta testers, with a wider release expected later. While enabled, users can still receive some messages from unknown accounts, but within an undisclosed limit to avoid spammers exploiting the feature. This new tool will join other advanced privacy features in WhatsApp, such as IP address protection during calls and disabling link previews to prevent third-party IP tracking. All three features require manual activation.
