The EU Commission called on YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok to provide details on the criteria their algorithms use to recommend content and how these systems might amplify significant risks, including those tied to elections, mental health, and safeguarding minors.
These requests, part of the Digital Services Act (DSA), also focus on the platforms’ efforts to limit the spread of illegal content, such as the promotion of drugs or hate speech, by adjusting their recommendation systems, according to an EU Commission statement.
Additionally, the commission has specifically asked TikTok for more details on its measures to prevent manipulation by malicious actors and to minimize risks linked to elections and public discourse.
The tech companies have until November 15 to comply with the request, after which the commission may impose penalties.
