Google Photos may soon introduce a feature that generates memory recaps using Gemini, the company's AI model, according to a recent report. This feature was discovered during an APK teardown of the app for Android. It aims to enhance memory creation by providing narrated recaps with contextual details, rather than just assembling slideshows based on photos. The app, which is the default media manager on most Android devices, has already received several updates this month, including an enhanced trim tool, an auto-enhance option, and a speed adjustment tool.
As reported by Android Authority, this feature was spotted during an APK teardown of Google Photos for Android version 7.1. The Gemini-powered memory creation feature is still in development and unavailable to even beta testers. Appearing under the "Memory types" settings, it could allow users to generate memory recaps powered by AI.
Speculation suggests that this feature may be integrated into Google’s “Year in Review” clips, offering more options for customizing yearly summaries. However, it remains unclear if this feature will pull data from other Google services, and it is expected to be an opt-in feature, giving users control over whether to enable it.
Google recently unveiled several new AI-driven features for its Photos app. One of the most significant is the "Ask Photos" feature, which lets users find specific images by typing conversational queries to Gemini AI. This feature is currently available only through Google Labs, making it experimental. Other recent additions include tools for adjusting video speed, enhancing image lighting and contrast, and trimming videos frame by frame.
